DAWSON, TERENCE J., DAVID ROBERTSHAW, AND C. RICHARD TAYLOR. Sweating in the kangaroo: a cooling mechanism during exercise, but not in the heat. Am. J. Physiol. 227(Z) : 494498. 1974.-The red kangaroo (Megaleia rufa) uses three evaporative cooling mechanisms : panting, sweating, and saliva spreading. Sweating only occurs during exercise. Resting kangaroos pant and spread saliva when faced with severe thermal load. We compared the heat balance of kangaroos resting at 24OC with that of animals hopping on a treadmill at a speed of 4 km. h-l. During this exercise heat production was approximately 8 times as great as at rest. About 43 y0 of the heat was lost by evaporation, 14% nonevaporatively, and approximately 43% was stored. Sweating accounted for 60% of the evaporative loss and respiratory evaporation accounted for about 40y0. The large increase in respiratory evaporation appeared to be due to increased respiratory ventilation required for the higher oxygen uptake. Salivation occurred during exercise, but spreading was not possible. Sweating declined and rapid panting commenced immediately when exercise ceased. Sweating appeared under the control of adrenergic neurons, the receptors being a-receptors. There was no evidence for the involvement of the adrenal medulla in sweating.

Does Cold Water or Ice Slurry Ingestion During Exercise Elicit a Net Body Cooling Effect in the Heat?

Cold water or ice slurry ingestion during exercise seems to be an effective and practical means to improve endurance exercise performance in the heat. However, transient reductions in sweating appear to decrease the potential for evaporative heat loss from the skin by a magnitude that at least negates the additional internal heat loss as a cold ingested fluid warms up to equilibrate with body t...

Maternal Voluntary Exercise during Pregnancy Enhances the Spatial Learning Acquisition but not the Retention of Memory in Rat Pups via a TrkB-mediated Mechanism: The Role of Hippocampal BDNF Expression

Objective(s): The effect of maternal voluntary exercise on hippocampal BDNF level in rat offspring was studied. In addition, the possible role of hippocampal BDNF receptors in maternal exercise induced enhancement of learning in the rat pups was investigated.   Materials and Methods: Pregnant rats have been randomly assigned to sedentary control or voluntary exercise groups. Each of the exerc...

Effect of prewarming in the cold season on thermoregulatory responses during exercise.

OBJECTIVE To assess whether thermoregulation in the cold season can be affected by prewarming before exercise. METHODS Four healthy non-athletic unacclimatised males were exercised to the same degree in summer and winter on a bicycle ergometer without prewarming (experiment 1) and after prewarming by sitting for 30 min in a room at 30 degrees C (experiment 2). During exercise, sweat productio...

Modeling Of Heat Transfer And Solidification Of Droplet/Substrate In Microcasting SDM Process

Microcasting Shape-Deposition-Manufacturing is an approach to Solid-Freeform-Fabrication (SFF) process which is a novel method for rapid automated manufacturing of near-net-shape multi-material parts with complex geometries. By this method, objects are made by sequentially depositing molten metal droplets on a substrate and shaping by a CNC tool, layer by layer. Important issues are concerned w...

Effect of facial cooling during heat acclimation process on adaptive changes in sweating activity.

On assumptions that tympanic temperature (Tty) reflects brain temperature and that the latter can be lowered by cooling of the face, effect of facial cooling during acclimation process on adaptive changes in sweating activity was examined, in comparison with the results of our previous studies on heat acclimation with controlled hyperthermia. Face fanning, by which Tty was clamped at approximat...
